September 24, 2010: St. Louis, Mo. – A little more than a year after the United States Postal Service (USPS) raised postal rates, they are proposing a rate hike more than 10 times the rate of inflation. A five-member Postal Regulatory Board still must approve the measure. The scheduled rate hike would take place January 1, 2011.
According to Kopytek Inc., a leading full-service printing, digital imaging, mailing and fulfillment company in St. Louis, Missouri, the rate increase will have devastating effects on the future of the USPS, leading to lower mail volume.
“A postal rate increase of this magnitude will simply drive down mail volume, digging the USPS into a deeper hole and putting people who depend on the postal service in a tight spot,” said John Peterson, Kopytek CEO. “We believe the USPS needs to revise its business model, like cutting Saturday service and reducing its workforce, before raising rates. Printers and marketers nationwide have already prepared for this possibility; we support alternatives that protect the mail service as a whole.”
To take action, Peterson encourages organizations affected by rate increases to show their opposition by sending the Postal Regulatory Board a downloadable fax template located on the Affordable Mail Alliance’s website at http://affordablemailalliance.org/DraftPRCFax.doc. The final decision is expected to be delivered on October 4, 2010.
