September 30, 2010: St. Louis, Mo. - In an economic climate where businesses and organizations nationwide operate on tightened budgets and reduced staff, the United States Postal Service (USPS) will be forced to the same. Unanimously rejecting a postal increase nearly ten times the rate of inflation, the Postal Regulatory Commission (PRC) cited the USPS's inability to quantify the effects of the recession and declining mail volume as reasons for an excessive rate increase.
"For years we have operated at the forefront of printing technology, pushing the envelope to save customers money in new and innovative ways," said John Peterson Kopytek CEO. "Many government agencies are allowed to spend nearly unchecked, never needing to improve their systems or structure. With the current consumer market it has never been more important for the USPS to consider options like eliminating Saturday service and reducing its workforce, much like a private business."
According to Peterson, the PRC's decision has saved thousands of jobs nationwide. The rate hike proposed would have raised first-class postage 5.6 percent, unsustainable for many small businesses. Also adding the postal rate hike would have cost customers an additional $3 billion annually.
"The USPS's cash flow problems were not a result of the recession and would have occurred with or without the recession," said Peterson. "Going forward the USPS needs to be more intelligent in their business decisions, incorporating innovation. They have many difficult decisions ahead, but the rejection of a postal increase will allow the USPS to become viable into the future."
